Symptoms of Hearing Loss

Does your partner, friend or family member display any of the following behaviour?

  • Complains that people seem to be mumbling
  • Has to strain to hear when someone talks or whispers
  • Has difficulties hearing someone call from behind or from another room
  • Focuses on your lips a lot, to follow what you are saying
  • Has difficulty following a conversation in meetings
  • Often turns up the volume on the TV or radio
  • Finds it hard to hear clearly on the telephone
  • Has difficulty hearing at the theatre, cinema, or other entertainment venues
  • Finds it hard to hear in noisy environments like a restaurant or a car
  • Is beginning to avoid social activities

If you recognise one or more of these symptoms, you should encourage them to have their hearing evaluated.

Hearing Facts
  • 1 in 10 people in the world is hearing impaired.
  • As the population ages - and noise pollution in the world increases - more and more people will be unable to hear well, potentially facing social isolation.
  • By 2015, an estimated 700 million people will be hearing impaired.

However, in many cases hearing loss is preventable, while correcting it can result in a significant improvement in the quality of life.
